Another win for the Waterloo thirds away to Rhein.Waterloo started the game with an unfamiliar formation of 4.5.1. which in truth didn,t do us any favours.Rhein were by far the best team in the early exchanges and took a deserved 1.0 lead. This could easily have been added to but for some last ditched tackles and blocks from the determined defenders. The midfield trio of Smith.Halpin and Crawford were at sixes and sevens as to which position to take up.Once this was sorted out there was a big difference in fortunes,Although it seemed like Halpin was invisible to Rob Crawford as he was reluctant to pass, even the once would have been nice.Enough said, take note Rob!!!!
Our midfield took a strangle hold on the game and we started to apply our own pressure. There was a steady supply of quality ball for the wide men of Tighe and Kennedy who in turn supplied the same quality into the oppositions box.One of these attacks resulted in a corner which striker Freeman headed home to level the scores.Waterloo were now well on top and looked very dangerous everytime they went forward. The second goal was scored by Rob Tighe. He was put through one on one with their keeper. He still had a lot to do as the ball came at head height,he cushioned the header steadied himself withe his second touch and slotted the ball fom a narrow angle inside the advancing keepers near post.He doubled his tally not long after.Dave Kennedy who was beating his marker time after time crossed the ball for Freeman who had his shot blocked, the ball broke 8 yards out for Tighe who slammed the ball home. Half time 3-1.
After the break there was only one team in it.The formation which we started with really started to pay dividends. At times Rhein were chasing shadows, Waterloo were totally dominating the midfield area with Smith and Crawford especially good.On the odd occasion when Rhein broke, Pete Daley was commanding at the heart of defence. The fourth and final goal came from the move of the game.Dave Smith picked the ball up in the centre of midfield, he conjured up a bit of magic made space for himself and went on a direct run for the byline. He supplied an inch perfect cross for the advancing Kennedy to finish with a side foot volley.Truly well taken goal.Game over.
Ther was a couple of late substitutions with Mckeating replacing the knackered Freeman who ran his socks off, being the lone striker. Mckeating could have grabbed himself a goal, he hurried a strike on goal which just went wide. Also the ever present Mather replaced Cooper who was marking a whippet on the wing, he also was knackered. Well done Ian, done a good job against a difficult opponent. The satisfy thing about this team is we are improving week by week.We are top of the league through sheer hard work and determination. We have set the standard now and anything less is not good enough.
There were many candidates for man of the match but Rob Tighe gets the vote for his tireless running and his brace of goals. Some very good performances from most of the team but Rob just shaded it. Well done boys!
