Alan Rutherford (Waterloo 1st team captain and WGSOB stalwart between 1980 & 1996) was never quite certain of his feelings for local rivals St Marys COB and was oft times heard quoting the following doggerel..
It was a bitter February Saturday 1985. A gale swept in from the Irish Sea across the dunes over the railway line and straight down the pitch at Hightown to bear against the dressing room door. It was a game we had to win. St Mary’s our deadly rivals had already battered us 3 – 0 at our place. Now was the return, that evening was our clubs night of the season the ‘Real Ale Coach Trip’ out in the wilds of Lancashire. My team talk was grim but gutsy ‘we have to win this one lads. Just imagine your feelings tonight, midway through your eleventh pint, if you are looking back on defeat – a spineless tackle, a dodgy near post header.’ To a man the pride of Crosby shook their heads cleared their throats and rubbed on an extra thick layer of liniment. Towering defender Andy ‘Big fella’ Duncalf spoke for all of us as he cried ‘let’s stuff the fenians!’ Eyes streaming with emotion I led the lads out into the teeth of the bitter wind, out towards glory…That night, my eleventh pint was the sweetest of my life!
Lest we forget - Edited Highlights
Gunnys warm up for the next tyson fight/punched clearances.
An abundance of centre halfs clearing everything.
The all round battling team performance.
Simon puts one just wide.
Geoff running round a lot (with the ball!)
Joe making it two in two
Joe not putting a foot wrong (the header however...)
The return of 'the Scan'
Waterloo Vets remain unbeaten this season
Mr Richardson latching on to a CW lay off and netting in style
Dave XXX flighting in a curling centre that fools everyone (Goal!)
So to summarise... Owen Gowell scored first for Marys after Waterloo had them on the rack for a good 20. Waterloo hit back quickly with a well taken Richardson strike. Marys started to play out and take control from the right and took the lead from an 'after you Maude' moment in the Waterloo defence which led to a 'trickler' but the ever reliable Dave C pulled it back with a 'curler' of his own. Finally 2 - 2 a reasonable result in a fast paced game that could have gone either way .
Oh yeah.. and Ged nearly scored
Feel free to add you own expanded highlights below....
Did we tell you Ged nearly scored.
